A New Door

A door to open all doors. Throughout the last year I have been exploring my writing more. I have started a blog and (only recently) have been posting regularly on it. I did a storytelling workshop. And most recently, while asking around for places to help me improve my writing, I was given the opportunity of a lifetime to start writing for a magazine.

Word Magazine is a magazine written completely in English, in Vietnam. I was referred to the magazine by someone else who works there, and after chatting with the director through e-mail, I was given a chance to submit a sample article of mine, being a café review.
Easy, I thought. I was wrong. Boy was I wrong. I started writing the review in the style in which I usually write in, the style I am used to and I am comfortable with, it was going well. When I asked for advice from the other guy who writes for them, he linked me to a document written by word for its writers. I went straight to the section about the café/restaurant reviews and was overwhelmed by the instructions and the outline that they expected, as it was NOTHING like what I am used to writing.
I have been trying really hard to ‘just say yes’ lately and to accept a challenge. All too often I will start something and never carry it through. Or I’ll think of something I want to do and never take any action towards that.

So just as I was thinking to myself that I need to email this guy back and tell him I can’t do it, I thought to myself… why? Why can’t I do it. What’s the harm in trying. The absolute worst thing that can happen, is I submit my sample article to him, and he says he hates it and it doesn’t go with the style of the magazine. At least I can say I tried. And who knows, if I try and this succeeds, then I actually get to say that I had my own work published in magazine in South East Asia. And this could lead to many more doors opening for me, and many more opportunities presenting themselves.

Thank you Hanoi for always dishing out exciting new things!
Comment below, what amazing opportunity has presented its self to you? Let me know 🙂
