“She asked me to get on my knees and spread my cheeks… it was time
for the crack” – A friend who definitely doesn’t want to be named.
There are so many horror stories out there about getting waxed in
Hanoi. Dark rooms, burnt skin, ingrown hairs, anything that can happen, will.
When Salon Van Nguyen announced that they were doing waxing, I was
so excited, as they are the salon that I go to for my haircuts and colours and
I trust them completely.
I made a few appointments, and never showed up. I hadn’t been
waxed in a long time, and I was so nervous to do it in such a different country.
When my friend messaged me recently to say “Hey, I’m going to get
waxed”, I insisted she bring me with her.
I finally got around to getting waxed in Hanoi and without going
into too much details, it was painful, but very worth it. Hanh, my waxer, was
very professional and very thorough.
When we arrived at the salon we
were given some water and were sat down to wait while they prepare the room.
After not long at all, they called us upstairs and we entered the room which
held two waxing tables and one very sheer
curtain. Even with the curtain closed, we could easily see each other. Luckily
we aren’t shy together.
It's at this point that Eminem's line 'Knees weak, palms are
sweaty.' comes to mind. Boy, were we sweating. It sure is nervous sitting
there, letting some stranger poke, prod, rip, and pluck places that probably
shouldn't be poked, prodded, ripped, and plucked.
It was painful, yes. But then it was over. Van and Hanh are very
professional, comfortable women, The salon uses an olive wax, which is heated
up to around 35-38 degrees in the waxing pot, and then applied to the skin.
Once cooled, the dry wax is ripped quickly off the skin, making it silky
smooth. At the end of the treatment, they use an olive massage oil.
Salon Van Nguyen offers a lot of different kinds of wax treatments at very affordable prices.
